Ross and his adventures - Echidna Spotting

Belrose was chosen for our walk. After a brief 5 minutes down the track our attention was drawn to an echidna burying itself in the sandy loam. The echidna immediately goes into the "foetal position" or "defensive position" as I pick him up. We took the opportunity of some photos and a nose to nose kiss before releasing our friend to go about her business. Later we came to a shallow pond where lots of tiny orchid like plants were in flower in the exposed mud. I managed a clear photo of a carnivorous beetle that can walk on water as well as fly. Then we spotted some wallaby tracks left in the mud. The highlight of the walk in terms of surprises was me being called by Michael to a large group of meat ants feasting on something in the sand of the middle of the track. A few photos and a macro photo suggested the ants were feeding on some vertebrae but where was the remainder of the carcass. A little curiosity and digital investigation hooked out of the sand a freshly killed diamond python that appeared to have been squashed or run over while in its burrow. A quick wash in the dam and a little creative arrangement helped produce another interesting photo! A quick shot of some carnivorous sundew plants before the walk back to the car and the trip home. And then finally, a visit to the throne accompanied by one of the Goldies produced a paralysis tick that had just attached and buried itself into the bridge of her nose. All this in a matter of an hour or so!
