Human Diseases from Birds : Fisherman's itch

Fisherman's Itch is one of the names for an extremely itchy form of dermatitis (inflammation of the skin) that results from the larvae of flukes hatching from eggs passed in faeces of water bird (eg seagulls, ducks) burrowing about half way into the skin where they die and initiate a local allergic reaction. This is likely to occur when fishermen stand in shallow water around the edges of bird frequented lakes and lagoons where there is little tidal movement of the water. In my case I was snorkeling in a very shallow rock pool at Dee Why that had not been flushed out for a week or so due to very calm seas. Fortunately I was wearing a summer wet suite so most of my body was protected. The photos depict a progression of the dermatitis before and after I purposely popped the little (pinhead sized) blisters forming in the centre of most "spots". This experience could have been prevented by total cover up or by thorough hosing down with fresh water immediately after the snorkel.
