Living with Birds : Section 3

PIDGEON & DOVE FOOD

The actual diet fed to these birds needs to be selected in terms of the individual species of pigeon or dove. Some species will eat and need fruit whereas others will not. Most but not all species will eat dry seeds. The following notes are guidelines.

- Dry Seeds

  • These can include peas, wheat, milo, peanuts or goundnuts and crushed maize or corn for pigeons and can include smaller seeds such as canary seed, millet, oats, and niger for doves.

  • Seeds should be supplemented with some protein rich pellets for captive fed birds.

    - Greens

  • These are not always fed, but lucerne, clover and silver beet are readily accepted by most species.

    - Fruit

  • Chopped banana, apple and pear are fed to native fruit pigeons. Various figs may also be offered.
