Living with Birds : Section 3

  • SHARING HUMAN FOOD WITH PET BIRDS

It is advisable to never let pet birds eat out of your mouth or to eat food that is otherwise mixed with human saliva

It may be a surprise to the uninitiated that there is a significant proportion of the pet bird owning population who regularly shares their meals at the dinner table etc. with their pet bird. There are many variations of the theme as to how this is actually done, from the bird being served its own plate of food, to having the freedom to sample whatever it chooses from the plates of members of the human family. Many people also literally kiss their pet birds and allow their pet birds to tongue or nibble their human lips, tongue and teeth. Apart from eating bird faeces there must be few better ways of transmitting certain diseases from bird to owner and vice versa. I can think of one better way of transmitting disease ... and this is true story.... !
