Living with Birds : Section 3
BIRD HAZARDS
These notes are to help you prevent your pet or caged bird coming to grief though "misadventure". Preventative medicine is usually much cheaper and more effective than trying to fix a problem after the event. For the purpose of these notes "hazard" or "hazardous" refer to something that is likely to adversely affect your bird's health or safety.
- Hazards within a bird cage
Cages overcrowded with toys, perches, surplus food and water containers which prevent exercise and flight.
Cages containing fine wire, fine synthetic threads, sources of lead, zinc, copper; galvanized and/or soldered food or water containers, sandpaper perch sleeves, sandpaper floor sheets, metal perches, dowelling perches, mirrors with unprotected backing, perches positioned one above another.
Cages containing accumulations of faeces, dust and/or moist mouldy food, or fouled water
Cages with dried regurgitated debris stuck to the mirror and/or other parts of the cage
- Hazards where bird cages are put
Beware of the following hazards:
Predators such as other birds, cats, dogs, snakes, rats, mice and goanas!
Certain children!
Extremes of weather.
Exposure to toxic sprays, fumes and poisons, including adjacent or overhanging poisonous plants.
