An Extract from Section 2 of The Complete Bird Care Compendium.

Caging Birds : Section 2

  • SUITABLE AND UNSUITABLE TOYS FOR BIRDS

Birds without a mate of opposite sex of own kind often appreciate an artificial "playmate"!

Birds like to play. The intelligence and emotional needs of the birds we keep as pets are often underestimated.

    - Safety First!

The first consideration when selecting toys for birds is safety. We can consider safety in terms of the following aspects.

    Not poisonous.
  • Beware of objects that may have been contaminated with pesticides and herbicides.
  • Beware of objects made from or painted with sources of lead, zinc, copper, mercury, chromium . Beware of mirrors with wooden frames and/or no backing. Beware of toy soldiers, toy cars, decorative buttons etc.
  • Beware of poisonous plants including avocado, oleander, rhubarb.
