Caging Birds : Section 2
BIRD BATHS AND SHOWERS FOR BIRDS
These notes are to help you help your pet or caged birds keep well and fit by improving their quality of life.
- Learning From Nature
Many of the birds we keep as pets enjoy a bath or shower.
- In the Wild - In Nature
Bird baths come in the form of shallow pools, puddles and the edge of shallow lakes. Showers come in the form of rain.
However, perhaps the most common washing behaviour is fluffing up the feathers and fluttering about in the water on wet leaves, be they long grass or on trees.
- Avairy birds and Rain
Aviary birds can often be seen hanging onto the wire sides of the cages fluffing up their feathers when it starts to rain.
When there is an open flight, some birds will purposely repeatedly fly out into the rain. They obviously enjoy getting some water on their feathers and body. However,
most do not stay out in the rain for long when they have the opportunity to take shelter. Approximately five minutes of getting wet is long enough for most.
