Caging Birds : Section 2

  • PERCHES FOR BIRDS: WHAT AND WHERE

Did you know unsuitable and poorly positioned perches predispose many caged birds to develop calluses , infected feet, crippling arthritis and life-threatening kidney disease? The following explains what you can do to help prevent such problems

    - Learning From Nature

In nature perching birds such as parrots, cockatoos, finches and canaries are constantly moving from one perch to another to another. Rarely will any two perches be the same size, shape, contour and texture. This means that in nature the underside of the birds' feet is constantly being "massaged" ... there is very little probability of the wild bird developing "pressure sores".

In nature there are thousands of perches for every bird, and the droppings of the kinds of birds we keep as pets are spread very thinly far and wide ... there is little probability of the bird having to perch on its own droppings or those of another bird.

    - Harmful and unsuitable perches.

  • Cylindrical doweling perches
  • Oval doweling perche
  • Metal perches
  • Slippery plastic perches
  • Sandpaper perches
  • Perches that are all narrow or the same diameter.
  • Fouled perches.
  • Poisonous and toxic perches.
  • Hardwood perches.
  • Splintery perches.
