Caging Birds : Section 2

  • IMPROVING YOUR BIRD'S CAGE

The following notes are to help you help your pet or caged bird keep well and fit. The majority of cages currently offered for sale are designed more to appeal to the buyer than to address the needs of the birds that have to live within them

One of my favourite sayings is:

"Most birds fly but birds are not helicopters!"

meaning most do not fly straight up or down. However, another observation is:

"Most bird poop does fall down until it lands on something!"

In many cages it is almost impossible, because of the cage shape and size to prevent the bird poop hitting the perch below, the food or water container or the bird's mate if it has one. With these points in mind, it is easy to understand why small cuboidal and tall cylindrical cages should be abandoned, if they have been your pet's main home.

    "Standard cocky cages" are horrific!

You might use one of these cages if you need to bring your pet to us for a health check, or perhaps you could grow a decorative plant in such a cage, but do not keep your bird in it any longer than necessary!

    So what do I recommend?
