Choosing Birds As Pets : Section 1

  • QUARANTINING PET BIRDS

It is advisable to voluntarily quarantine any newly acquired bird if you already have other birds at home.

Quarantining in this context means physically keeping the bird(s) in quarantine physically isolated and separated from other birds, be they other caged birds or wild birds. If the birds are kept in the house they should be kept in a room separate and different from that used for any other birds. The room ideally should be a non-thoroughfare room to minimize the risk of transferring spilt seed and faeces from one room to another. If your birds are to be kept outdoors, then they should be placed in a separate cage as far away as practical from any other caged birds. The cage should be constructed to prevent access by wild birds to the quarantined birds, their food and their faeces.

Any waste seed, cage litter and faeces from the quarantined birds should be incinerated or disposed of in sealed plastic garbage bags, or flushed down the toilet if appropriate.
