Choosing Birds As Pets : Section 1

  • Bird choosing questions

    - Why do you want a pet bird?
    - Is it "just for your children, like a new toy?"
    - Do you intend to confine it to a cage for life?
    - Which species can or cannot "talk"?
    - Which birds are inclined to bite hard or be destructive?
    - Do you know to which diseases the species of bird is prone or susceptible?

Do you know the characteristics and traits of the types of birds you are considering as pets? Are any of these attributes important to you?

Carefully chosen budgerigars and quarions or cockatiels are likely to make very suitable house pets, whereas single pet cockatoos, corellas and galahs are not.

Be sure to inspect each bird on display, as well as the individuals you want, for signs of disease.

Remember, there is more to choosing a bird than good luck.
